MICROGEO
Astranis’ first MicroGEO spacecraft, Arcturus, on a vibration table. During my time at Astranis, I performed vibration qualification testing on the electric-propulsion gimbal.
What is it?:
MicroGEO is Astranis’ geostationary satellite that will increase internet access to underserved communities around the world. It was named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2022.
How did you contribute?:
I was the responsible engineer for and lead the development of the novel electric-propulsion gimbal mechanism, designed to increase overall spacecraft lifetime by one year (15% increase in total operational life for end customer). This included doing design work, FEA analysis, prototype assembly, and qualification testing.
In addition, I designed payload configurations with RF passive components and performed initial sizing trade studies for future customers. I also worked on the design and test of a new avionics enclosure.
BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS:
How to lead a cross-functional team for a complex new development project
Designing and evaluating trades for harsh spacecraft launch and orbit environments
Environmental testing (vibration, thermal, vacuum)
Rapid project and process management (Jira, Smartsheet)
